The legacy of segregation and oppression in South Africa has negatively impacted the social fabric of the country. This has deferred the building of social cohesive and inclusive communities in South Africa. The country is still faced with social cohesion challenges that manifest in endless incidents of racism and gender-based violence.

As part of its interconnectedness and inclusivity initiative, ACTIVATE! Change Drivers in collaboration with the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) and other civil society partners, will host an Indaba under the theme: Youth working towards a socially cohesive South Africa.

Sector coordinator and event organiser, Nkokheli Mankayi says that the Indaba aims  “to bridge the disconnects in society through critical platforms of engagements and have young people be advocates for Social Change in their communities. This is not to take away from the struggles of youth in 1976 but it is to continue their legacy for an equal and just South Africa. In the words of Former President Nelson Mandela, “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”

The event seeks to critically engage on the various issues that both limit and promote social cohesion; allowing the youth to share innovative initiatives that promote social cohesion in their different communities. The Youth Indaba will be in the form of a panel discussion followed by a solution-driven conversation towards action. Come and join the conversation.
