Today, young people aged 10-241 represent the largest generation in history, 1.8 billion,
and represent a diverse group with different needs and aspirations that vary across and
within regions2. In the less developed regions, young persons aged 15 to 24 accounts for
18 per cent of the population. In fact, the numbers of young people in the less developed
regions are at an all-time high (1.1 billion young people), posing a major challenge for
their countries. At the same time, globally, the number of people 60 years and over is
expected to more than double, from 841 million people in 2013 to more than 2 billion in
2050.
