Jolandre Tolli does not make it home tonight.

16 year old Jolandre Tolli did not make it home that night. This grade 11 learner who went to Weslaan High School in Douglas was last seen at a local tavern wearing a black top with blue jeans.

One can only imagine the agony that her mother was going through that night. Her 16 year old daughter had not returned home. Was she still alive? Did she eat? Was she warm? Was she safe from harm? Will she make it home tomorrow morning? Endless questions that only lead to more turmoil.

I do not want to imagine what was going on in young Jolandre’s head. Was she scared for her life? Was she grabbed with force, or was she lured with sweet words? Did she put up a fight or did she stop herself form fighting in a futile attempt to save her life? Would she be able to identify the man who abducted her, if she were to escape?

What torture and pain did young Jolandre have to endure? The community was divided in opinion. Some members of the community were really worried about this young woman, other members reckoned that she ran away with a boyfriend and that she’d return home when she was ready. Meanwhile, Jolandre Trolli was suffering a pain none of us can imagine, at the hands of a man who 13 years her senior. What cruelty is this, South Africa?

The half-naked, bloodied body of 16 year old Jolandre Tollie was found, with her throat slit, in an open veld, in Breipaal, Douglas- a little over a 100 meters from her home. A 29 year old Rodrich Francke was arrested shortly after Jolandre’s body was found.

What did Jolandre do to deserve such injustice? What crime could she have committed to have her life taken from her at such a tender age? Once again, another woman was murdered for the simple reason of being a woman. May we always #RememberHer.
