RE: CELEBRATING POWERFUL WOMEN DURING WOMENS MONTH #IAMAPOWERFULWOMXN #AWOMXN
The Activate Change Drivers network of over 4200 young people will be celebrating the powerful impact that the young women in the network have had on their communities. Over 49% of the network is female, and they are reinforcing the narrative that they are leaders and a force for good who are ready to take a stand and lead their communities. During the pandemic, young women in the network have started book clubs; donated food parcels and have continued to speak out against the prevalence of gender-based violence (GBV). We celebrate young women like Tremaine Barnes from Kimberely also known as the Kaalvoet Princess who started a Barefoot campaign to raise awareness about the scourge of GBV; we celebrate young women like Yolokazi Mfuto from eXesi kwaMathole in the Eastern Cape who travels the world to share her views on HIV/AIDS and is passionate about empowering other women, and lastly young women like Nomalanga Tshuma, an anti GBV journalist who is a passionate social activism. She advocates for young women and children, her initiative, “Define a girl” focuses on mentoring young women.
It is against this backdrop that Activate Change Drivers launches the I am a powerful women campaign to celebrate the amazing role young women play in society. Women face many obstacles – young women still experience high levels of violence; a lack of economic opportunities for women entrepreneurs and slow access to sexual and reproductive health are just a few of the challenges that continue to be an uphill battle. During August, the young women in the network will be leading conversations around these ills in order to raise their voices, empower themselves; empower their communities; empower their children and empower their futures.
