Reflecting on THE PAST SIX MONTHS: Uniting Stronger & Growing Together

In the first half of 2024, ACTIVATE!’s civic education program focused on strategic planning and robust execution to prepare and engage youth voters for the 2024 general elections. This groundwork led to activities promoting inclusive participation in democratic processes, with support from UNDP and IEC.

Highlights included a door-to-door voter registration campaign in Johannesburg’s Bree taxi rank and the Weed Lovers Market, engaging young professionals in discussions about democratic participation. This nationwide campaign registered over 500 voters and reached over a million individuals on social media.

High school voter education activations empowered young first-time voters, promoting informed civic participation. Civic education champions’ community events in Gauteng, Western Cape, and KZN integrated civic and voter education into local activities, increasing awareness and interest among young voters.

The second quarter continued voter education initiatives, focusing on town hall engagements and election observer training. A national town hall debate at the University of Johannesburg on May 5, broadcast on SABC’s Elections 360 program, facilitated dialogue between voters and political representatives. Another town hall in Umhlabuyalingana, KZN, with One Mark, engaged young people and community leaders.

One significant platform was the Accredited Facilitator training conducted by MI Learning and Development Consultancy. Nine Generation G champions, one other Activator, and three staff members successfully attained accredited qualifications in facilitation.

Generation G champions participated in other training opportunities, including the Immersion Workshop hosted in Parktown from April 3-6, and a series of Access to Justice and IDP training conducted in the second quarter. These learning opportunities empowered Generation G champions with knowledge on topics such as monitoring, evaluation and learning, risk management, youth leadership, media and policy advocacy.

From April to June, Generation G coordinated a series of activities, including stakeholder engagement sessions and community dialogues to mobilize public support for gender justice and GBV prevention. On April 25, Generation G champions in KZN organized a community dialogue in Inanda under the theme “Harnessing Youth Leadership in Response to GBVF,” with 77 participants, including representatives from Raising Hope Community Project, Simunye Community Organization, V Values, and Zithobeni Community Project.

From May 21-25, Generation G champions in Gauteng conducted two community dialogues in Orange Farm and Tembisa and a stakeholder engagement in Orange Farm. These engagements highlighted the role of young people in responding to GBV.
The community dialogue in Orange Farm was hosted at Dipontsho Disability Centre, targeting persons with disabilities, youth, and the LGBTQA+ community, reaching 67 participants.
ACTIVATE! is working with the Gen G SA Coalition to develop the Gen G Engage app, a digital platform empowering youth, civil society organizations, and the community with evidence-based information to advocate for accountability and efficiency in South Africa’s justice system.
